Character Name: Anti-Spiral
Character Series: Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann
Background:
The Anti-Spiral is simply that--his entire being, his sole purpose in existing, is to oppress Spiral beings and keep them from toppling his perfect, stationary universe. The Spirals act as his utter opposite: they live with a constant desire to grow , improve and evolve, while the Anti-Spiral favors the static and unchanging. The Anti-Spiral believes that the always-changing nature of Spiral beings, if left unchecked, will eventually lead to what he refers to as the Spiral Nemesis--that is, the destruction of the universe.
The Anti-Spiral admits, however, to once being a Spiral being himself. Or rather, his origin came as a result of a people who were once Spiral beings--one of the most advanced Spirals at the time. Despite being Spirals, they grew wary of Spiral Energy and its potential to push them toward immeasurable growth--growth they believed would inevitably lead to the destruction of the universe.
Spiral Nemesis.
The theory caught on, among scientists, physicians and the various higher-ups. Once support was nearly unanimous, action was taken: the remaining advanced Spiral beings would have to be crushed and reduced so that they no longer posed a threat to the well-being of the universe. War was made. The Spirals, with such notable Spiral Knights as the famed Lord Genome, hailing from Earth, fought a long, bloody war. Yet the effort was in the vain; the Spirals were defeated, and the Anti-Spirals gained control of the universe.
To make themselves true Anti-Spiral beings, the Anti-Spirals put their home planet in a forced state of complete and utter stasis. There would be no change. No growth. No evolution. Their existence was bland; they lay in rows of identical neighbors, bodies unmoving and faces blank. They were represented by a single being simply known as the Anti-Spiral. His task, as stated, was to keep the Spiral beings in check.
Once the Spirals were defeated, they returned to their separate home planets. To ensure they would never rise up again, the Anti-Spiral installed a system of surveillance that would monitor each planet where Spiral beings lived. Should the Spiral beings become too powerful, a defense system would kick in and eliminate the threat. A messenger, too, would be planted on each planet; it was through the messenger that the Anti-Spiral could glean information necessary to put down any Spiral beings that would rise to challenge him.
And many did. As per their nature, many groups of Spiral beings over thousands of years rose to thwart their oppressor. Yet the Anti-Spiral was never defeated. As the years passed, the Anti-Spiral became extremely effective at defeating Spiral beings. His main tool was a tactic he called Absolute Despair, which aimed to suck the hope and will to fight from his enemies, as both hope and willpower acted as a fuel for Spiral Power. Time and again, the Anti-Spiral’s tactics proved effective.
Some leaders, such as Lord Genome of Earth, came to the conclusion that fighting the Anti-Spiral was futile. In response, Genome ruled Earth in a way that would keep the number of Spiral beings occupying it under the level that would prove threatening to the Anti-Spiral. For a long time, Genome’s methods proved effective. Yet finally he was overwhelmed by a force of Spiral beings, lead by the illustrious Simon, and lost control of Earth. From the there, the planet’s population surged. Seven years later, they had grown enough to be recognized by the Anti-Spiral.
The automatic Anti-Spiral defenses kicked in, yet they proved to be inadequate. Once the Spiral beings overcame the defenses, the Earth’s Anti-Spiral messenger, Nia, left Earth and arrived at the Anti-Spiral home planet. Though able to learn a significant amount from Nia, the Anti-Spiral was surprised by her continuous, spirited resistance. Not particularly concerned, the Anti-Spiral kept on with business as usual. Yet as his tactics failed repeatedly to destroy the Simon and his group of Spiral beings, the Anti-Spiral was forced to play his trump card.
He swept the group of Spirals into an Alternate Space Labyrinth, with the purpose to trap them in an alternative universe from which there was no escape. It was a trap that had proven to be 100% effective; no intelligent being could escape from the Alternate Space Labyrinth. Yet achieving the impossible had never been a problem for Simon and company, and with a little help from the spirit of a long-dead comrade, they were able to free themselves from the Labyrinth. Harnessing their Spiral power, the group formed Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, a galaxy-sized mech that would do final battle with the Anti-Spiral. With an effort to impose Absolute Despair, the Anti-Spiral created a similar mech.
Before the first attack was launched, the Anti-Spiral entered Memento Eden.
Personality:
Over time, the Anti-Spiral has become a cold opposite to the ways of the Spiral beings. The Anti-Spiral is adverse to flux, or change of any sort. Whereas a Spiral beings will always strive to grow and better itself, the Anti-Spiral is dead set in its ways and beliefs, and refuses to alter them regardless of outside influence. This attitude comes as result of the belief in Spiral Nemesis, that unchecked evolution and change will eventually lead to destruction of the universe.
The Anti-Spiral places the utmost faith in cold hard logic. During his interactions with Spiral beings, he acts and speaks with extreme confidence and a knowing that no matter the effort mustered against him, he will never lose. Hiding deeper in the Anti-Spiral, however, is a feeling of powerful self-righteousness, revealed during his final battle with Simon and company. He preaches to them during the fight, revealing the sacrifices he and his people made to protect the world from Spiral Nemesis. Despite his self-righteous nature, however, the Anti-Spiral is not opposed to learning. He uses learning and knowledge to improve his ability to thwart the Spirals.
Also, the Anti-Spiral has learned to utilize despair as an effective tool and weapon. To Spiral beings, he personifies the voice in their head that taunts them, telling them you can’t. You can never win. Give up. It’s impossible. When necessary, he can play the perfect cynic. He is not, however, cynical toward his own being--when it comes to his own beliefs and actions, he knows that he is unshakably in the right.
